When Outlook is not working correctly on a Windows computer, the issue is often related to connectivity, a stuck process, or a problem with the local Outlook profile. The following basic steps resolve many common Outlook problems.

1. Confirm Internet Connection

Outlook requires an internet connection to send and receive email.

  1. Open a web browser and try visiting a website.

  2. If the website does not load, check the computer’s Wi-Fi or network connection.

  3. If the internet is not working, reconnect to the network and try Outlook again.

2. Check Outlook’s Connection Status

Outlook may sometimes switch to offline mode.

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. Look at the bottom-right corner of the Outlook window.

  3. Confirm it says Connected or Connected to Microsoft Exchange.

If it says Working Offline:

  1. Click the Send/Receive tab.

  2. Select Work Offline to turn it off.

3. Restart Outlook

Sometimes Outlook simply needs to be restarted.

  1. Close Outlook completely.

  2. Wait a few seconds.

  3. Open Outlook again from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.

4. Restart the Computer

If restarting Outlook does not resolve the problem, restart the computer.

  1. Save your work in other programs.

  2. Click Start → Power → Restart.

  3. After the computer restarts, open Outlook again.

Restarting clears background processes that may interfere with Outlook.

5. Check for Large or Stuck Emails

A large attachment stuck in the Outbox can prevent messages from sending.

  1. Open the Outbox folder in Outlook.

  2. Look for messages that failed to send.

  3. Delete the message or remove large attachments and try sending again.

6. Check for Outlook Updates

Keeping Outlook updated helps resolve bugs and connection issues.

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. Click File → Office Account.

  3. Select Update Options → Update Now.

Allow updates to install and restart Outlook if prompted.

7. Check Microsoft 365 Service Status

Sometimes the issue is caused by a service outage rather than the computer.

Try accessing email through Outlook on the web:

  1. Open a web browser.

  2. Go to https://outlook.office.com.

  3. Sign in with your work account.

If email works in the browser but not in Outlook, the issue is likely with the Outlook application.

When to Contact IT

Contact IT support if:

  • Outlook will not open at all

  • Outlook repeatedly asks for your password

  • Emails are not syncing or sending after restarting

  • You receive repeated error messages when opening Outlook

In those cases, the Outlook profile or account configuration may need to be repaired or recreated.
