If the external monitor(s) that your desktop or laptop docking station is connected to isn't working try these troubleshooting steps:
1. Check the Physical Connections
Start with the basics.
Make sure the monitor is powered on and the power light is visible.
Verify the power cable is securely connected to both the monitor and the wall outlet.
Check that the video cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or VGA) is firmly connected to both the monitor and the computer.
If using an adapter or dock, confirm it is fully seated and connected.
A loose cable is the most common cause of display issues.
2. Confirm the Monitor Input Source
Many monitors have multiple input ports.
Use the buttons on the monitor to open the monitor menu.
Navigate to Input / Source.
Make sure the monitor is set to the correct input (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.).
If the monitor is set to the wrong input, it will show “No Signal.”
3. Restart the Computer
Sometimes the computer simply fails to detect the monitor.
Save your work.
Restart the computer.
After login, check whether the monitor activates.
4. Detect the Monitor in Windows
If the screen still does not appear:
Right-click the desktop.
Select Display settings.
Scroll down and click Detect under Multiple Displays.
If Windows finds the monitor, it will appear in the display layout diagram.
5. Check Display Mode
The computer may be set to duplicate or single-screen mode.
Press:
Windows key + P
Choose one of the following options:
Extend – adds the external monitor as a second screen
Duplicate – mirrors the main display
Second screen only – shows only on the external monitor
“Extend” is typically the preferred option.
6. Test the Cable or Port
If the monitor still does not work:
Try a different video cable.
Try a different port on the computer if available.
Test the monitor with another computer.
This helps determine whether the problem is the monitor, cable, or computer port.
